Chess

Waupaca Schools offers two related Chess Programs:
Chess Club, and Chess Team

Chess Club:
The Chess Club meets in room 1227 at the High School on Tuesdays and Thursdays from late October until mid March. Each session/practice lasts from 3:30-5:00pm. Chess Club is open to all students (K-12)  and staff in the Waupaca School District. Players of all abilities are welcome! No experience is necessary, and students are welcome to come and learn how to play.
There is NO cost to join chess club.
WLC and WMS Students can make arrangements to ride a bus from the Middle School to the High School
Chess Club ends after the NEWCA Conference Tournament in March. Chess Team members continue practicing through the State and National Tournaments.

 

Chess Team:
The Chess Team is an extension of the Chess Club. Like the Club, the Team is open to students of all ages (K-12) and all abilities. Practices are held in conjunction with Chess Club, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:00pm at the High School.

Waupaca competes in the Northeast Wisconsin Chess Association (NEWCA). NEWCA includes:
Big Falls Home School Association
Green Bay Catholic Schools
Green Bay Preble High School
Marion Public Schools (with students from Clintonville, Manawa, Shiocton and Tigerton)
Neenah Public Schools
Nekoosa Public Schools
Stevens Point Public Schools
Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools
Westfield Public Schools

 

Tournaments are held on Saturdays, December through March, and last from approximately 9am-3pm
Waupaca School District provides school bus transportation to away tournaments.

Students do not have to pay entry fees, but do have to pay the activity fee for their school/ season
Elementary: K-4th    Free
Middle: (5th-8th)     $10
High School        $20

Our Chess Team has been very successful, winning State Division 3 Championships in 2004, 2005 and 2011, along with a number of Top 5 finishes in both Division 2 and 3. The High School has won two National Championships, winning the US Chess Federation’s Unrated Division in 2006 and the Under 800 in 2014. Two Waupaca players, Alex Hanke and Ryan Hemmila have won individual National Championships.
